Just a thought

I was thinking this morning of what to blog about. I am a call center representative for Yankee Candle. So, if you call in to place an order from our catalog or our website, I may be who you talk to. As I was wondering what to talk about today, I started thinking about the orders we get. Some of our most popular fragrances are the simple ones, the ones that take us back to a simpler way of life. For example, one of our most popular fresh fragrances is Clean Cotton, which reminds people of clothes hanging on a clothes line. How many of us still use a clothes line? Most people I know use a dryer, because it is faster, more convenient. Yet, we still enjoy the scent of the clothesline. Some of our food fragrances that are popular are our baking scents, ie. buttercream, vanilla cupcake, chocolate cupcake, etc. How many of us still bake on a regular basis? I remember my mom baking, and, I do bake on occasion, but, do not have time with my busy schedule to do this on a regular basis. Yet, I love these fragrances, because it takes me back to when life was simpler.
This time of year our floral fragrances are very popular. Everyone is getting in the mood for spring. We may not have the time to grow a beautiful flower garden, but we know that, with one of these candles, we can still enjoy one. On and on I could go.
So, I guess what I am saying is, another thing candles do for us is soothe us, calm us, remind us of when life was simpler. So, come for a visit. Come find the fragrance that does this for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few frequently asked questions about our company and our products. Hopefully this will be useful to some of you!

Q: Does Yankee Candle Company use lead wicks? A: There has been a good deal of recent coverage in the media regarding possible health issues relating to candles containing lead wicks, some of which has unfortunately been confusing or misleading. In order to eliminate any concern or confusion on the part of our guests and consumers in general, THE YANKEE CANDLE COMPANY WOULD LIKE TO ASSURE YOU THAT YANKEE CANDLE DOES NOT USE LEAD WICKS IN ANY OF OUR CANDLE PRODUCTS. Moreover, the National Candle Association, of which Yankee Candle is a long-standing member, strongly supports the Consumer Products Safety Commission's recent work toward banning the use of leaded wicks. All of our products are today manufactured with pure cotton wicks that are free from lead and completely safe. At Yankee Candle we care deeply about the health and well-being of our guests and customers. After all, many of them are our own families, friends and loved ones. We are therefore firmly committed to producing high quality candle products that can be enjoyed and enjoyed safely. This has been our mission for over 30 years and we will continue to strive to offer the very best candles available.

Q: How can I keep my candles looking their best? A: Candles will discolor or fade when they are exposed to intense light for extended periods. We do not recommend displaying your candles for long periods in direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting or other strong illumination. Wax will soften in temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit. This may cause taper candles to bend or negatively affect the quality of your candles. Store your candles in a cool, dry place.

Q: Why do candle wicks sometimes become mushroom shaped? A: When the candle is consuming wax more quickly than the flame can burn completely, carbon deposits may develop. This will most likely occur when the wick needs to be trimmed. Blow out the flame, trim off the wick and carbon deposit and relight. Do not allow the wick trimmings or other materials to fall into the wax pool.

Q: Do you have a candle that "eats" smoke or cooking odors? A: All of our fragranced candles will cover smoke or cooking odors. There is no magic ingredient that will make one candle more effective than others, though one of our stronger fragrances may work more quickly to cover the odor.

Q: How do I use Tarts® Wax Potpourri? A: Tarts® Wax Potpourri offer you exceptional home fragrancing without the mess of traditional simmering potpourri. Place Tarts® Wax Potpourri in the top of a dry potpourri burner and never add water. Light one of the unscented Tarts® Warmers (never use scented tea lights) for a controlled low flame made especially for potpourri burners. When melted, the wax potpourri will release its wonderful fragrance. You can also mix different fragrances together to create your own unique blend of aromas.

Q: How do you make your candles smell so authentic? A: That's our secret! We actually have a committee dedicated to researching fragrances. Once the committee recommends a candle, a separate group of individuals from throughout our company test it for authenticity of fragrance and quality of burn.

Q: Which is your most fragrant candle? A: Our jar candles contain the highest percentage of fragrance oil. More fragrance is emitted from our 22 ounce jar because the pool of melted wax it produces is larger.

Q: Why are some fragrances discontinued? A: Consumer tastes change over time. As a result certain fragrances may decline in popularity to the point that it is no longer feasible to continue making them.

Q: What is the difference between Yankee candles and another brand? A: The Yankee Candle Company has been devoted to the art of crafting candles for thirty years. We use only the highest quality materials: pure cotton wicks, glassware, and premium-grade, highly-refined paraffin waxes specially blended for optimum burning and fragrancing performance. We also offer the most fragrances you will find. Yankee Candle Company stands behind the quality of our product with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. And, we're made in the U.S.A.!

Nostalgia and Yankee Candle

Of all the senses, the sense of smell is probably one of the best to take us back in time. One reason Yankee Candle is so popular is the nostalgia our guests experience when they smell certain of our candle fragrances. For me, I love anything citrus, as it reminds me of being a child at Christmas, and finding that orange in the toe of my stocking. I asked some other Yankee Candle associates what their favorite fragrance was, and why. Here are a few of their answers:

Midsummers Night-it reminds me of the fragrance my first boyfriend wore. Marion S.

Baby Powder- it is the fragrance of the candle Yankee Candle gave me when my daughter, Aurora, was born. James B.

Anything Vanilla-it reminds me of my mom baking when I would come home from school. Lucille J.

Dune Grass-it reminds me of Plum Island, Ma. Laurie L.

What is your favorite fragrance, and why? Go visit your local Yankee Candle, find that candle, and be taken back in time.......

The Yankee Candle Company-A True American Success Story

From humble beginnings …Christmas 1969. Seventeen-year-old Mike Kittredge, too broke to buy his mother a present, melted some crayons to make her a candle. A neighbor saw it and convinced Mike to sell the candle to her. With that small stake, he bought enough wax to make two candles - one for his mom, and another to sell. That was the birth of Yankee Candle.
To America's favorite brand of premium scented candles …Yankee Candle has become the #1 most-recognized name in the candle business and the country's best selling candle brand by sharing our customers' “passion for fragrance” in every product we bring to market.
Today, with over 150 fragrances, we offer the world's largest and most compelling selection of candle and home fragrance scents. In addition to our renowned Housewarmer® line of scented candles, we also provide a wide range of seasonal and specialty scented candles, home fragrance products, car fresheners and candle accessories.
Along with the regular introduction of new Yankee Candle® products and fragrances, we've also grown by adding other brands to our portfolio, including Aroma Naturals® brand of pure, natural aromatherapy candles and related products.
The majority of our candles are made by master chandlers (candlemakers) in our advanced manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts. We sell our candles and other products through a growing nationwide base of 423 Yankee Candle retail stores. We also have a vibrant and growing catalog and online business, an expanding North American wholesale customer network (including approximately 17, 500 specialty retailers in the U.S.), our Yankee Candle Fund-Raising division, and international distribution.
Today, the future looks bright for new growth and expanding opportunities as we continue to write new chapters in this true American success story.

General Candle Burning Instructions

Thought this would be a great spot to put our burning instructions.

General candle burning instructions:

Prior to lighting, please remove all packaging.
Keep burning candles within sight at all times; never leave a burning candle unattended.
Keep burning candles away from flammable materials and out of reach of children and pets.
Keep wick trimmed to 1/8” at all times.
If smoking occurs, extinguish flame, re-trim the wick to 1/8”, remove trimmings and relight.
Only burns candles in or on suitable holders and place them on heat and fire resistant surfaces.
Do not place on or near other heat sources, and never directly on furniture.
Keep wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches or any combustible material. Keep the wick centered.
Place your candle in an area free from drafts to discourage dripping and smoking.
Extinguish candles with care, as wax may splatter. A candle quencher or snuffer is recommended.

Jar Candles:

Glass containers are fragile; handle with care. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when handling the lid, and don’t use jars that are cracked, chipped or scratched.

Discontinue use when 1/2”to 1” of wax remains, as glass may shatter. Do not refill jars with wax.
If smoking occurs, extinguish flame, re-trim the wick to 1/8”.
Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the jar, as it may become hot. Handle carefully.
Minimize the wax left on the sides until the wax pool reaches the edge of the jar (usually about one hour per inch of diameter). It’s normal for some wax to remain, and the amount varies per color, fragrance and burning environment.
Extinguish carefully before replacing the lid.

Pillars:

To prevent dripping, extinguish the flame when the wax pool reaches the edge and allow candle to cool and harden before relighting.
Discontinue use when ½” of wax remains.

Taper candles:

Be sure tapers are straight and set firmly in their holders. Trim wick to 1/8” before lighting.
To prevent possible dripping: avoid drafts, excessive vibrations or nearby heat sources.
Hurricane lanterns may cause dripping due to the build up of heat. We suggest using a decorative bobeche, designed to catch dripping wax.

Scented tealights:

Do not burn in an enclosed space like a potpourri pot or Tart® burner. For this purpose, use Tart® Warmers (unscented tea lights), and be sure the burner is well ventilated.
If wick smokes or builds up carbon, extinguish flame and remove the carbon before relighting.

Samplers® votive candles:

Votives are made to liquefy; burn them only in appropriate holders, never burn freestanding.

Tarts® wax Potpourri:

Place Tarts® Wax Potpourri in a suitable potpourri burner, and light an unscented tea light candle beneath (Tart® Warmers, which burn with a low, controlled flame, are recommended).
To change fragrances, extinguish the flame and use potholder to pick up the tart burner and pour the melted wax into a lined wastebasket. Or you can harden the wax in a freezer, and pop it out into the palm of your hand.

Please use only UL approved electric Tart® burners with Tart® Wax Potpourri.

Candle burn times:
22 oz. Jar Candle: 110-150 hours
14.5 oz Jar Candle: 65-90 hours
3.7 oz Jar Candle: 25-40 hours
2.8 x 3” Pillars: 35-45 hours
2.8 x 6” Pillars: 70-85 hours
Samplers®: up to 15 hours
Scented tea lights: 4-6 hours
Tarts® Wax Potpourri: up to 8 hours
Beanswax 18 oz Candle: up to 55 hours
Beanswax 9 oz. Candle: up to 45 hours
Beanswax 3.7 oz. Candle: up to 15 hours

We hope that this information proves helpful

Great Store Experience !

When great service is experienced by our guests, whether shopping through the catalog, online or in one of our many Yankee Candle Company® stores, sometimes they like to share it:

"Dear Yankee Candle,

I just wanted to write a quick note to let you know as a corporation what kind of helpful and kind sales people you have hired for your Potomac Mills location in Woodbridge, VA.

I went this evening, November 6 and a young lady with long dark hair offered to help me find anything I might be looking for. She held my merchandise while I shopped and was extremely courteous. I just wanted to let you know that I really did appreciate the extra effort she put forth to insure a great shopping experience at your store.

Thank you again,

Amy R"

What an awesome review!

What Amy didn't realize is that the "extra effort" she experienced that evening was just an example of how Yankee Candle likes to treat all of our guests. You're the reason we're here!

If you've had an extraordinary experience with Yankee Candle, we'd love to hear your story!
